The Great Halloween Candy Buy Back 2014

Halloween flyer

Can you believe the Halloween candy is already on the shelves of every store around?  Are you dreading the sugar highs and crashes of your children on Halloween and the next couple of days as they shove all that candy down as fast as they can?  Do you wish you could find a way to make all that candy mysteriously disappear – AND have your kids actually excited about it?!?!?  Would you even like to do something support our troops abroad and brighten their day? Then it’s time to mark your calendar for the 2014 Great Halloween Candy Buy Back!

What is the Halloween Candy Buy Back?

Operation Gratitude logo smallerThe HCCB (for short) was started in 2005 by Dr. Chris Kammer in his own community, and since then it has grown dramatically, eventually partnering with Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that supports our troops serving abroad in various ways.  Here’s how Operation Gratitude describes it’s mission (as found on it’s website)

Operation Gratitude annually sends 150,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, plus personal letters of appreciation, to New Recruits, Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors, Care Givers and to individually named U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Our mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military. Each package contains donated product valued at $75-100 and costs the organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than One Million Care Packages.

How Does it Work?

This is the best part – all you have to do is bring your child(ren) to our office, which is conveniently located at the corner of Park Rd. and Abbey Place, just a block south of Woodlawn, right near the Park Rd. Shopping Center.  Here’s the details:

WHERE?

4601 Park Rd. #175, Charlotte, NC 28209

WHEN?

Saturday, November 1st from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

We will continue collecting candy during normal office hours through Thursday, Nov. 7th at 5pm.

What Happens There & Then?

  • For each 1 pound of unopened candy, we pay your child $1, up to a maximum of 5 pounds/dollars
  • Your child gets to write a postcard or short letter to the troops that will accompany the candy
  • We will be offering FREE CAVITY SCREENINGS during the whole event if your child hasn’t seen a dentist recently (no x-rays or cleanings included)
  • Each child will get a Goodie Bag with Halloween-themed toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste

School Outreach

We are reaching out to Parent/Teacher Associations in the South Charlotte area and will be distributing Coupons to schools, which will be given to kids.  Your children will bring those Coupons to our office, and the school with the most coupons collected will receive a $150 Donation to their Parent-Teacher Association from our office.

[UPDATE] A Record Year!

So how did we actually do this year with our Halloween Candy Buy Back?  Well, we think we did pretty darn well – we collected EXACTLY 200 pounds of candy!  Given that we only collected about 30-40lbs the first time we did this (because we had no idea how to promote it LOL), this means we collected FIFTY TIMES MORE in our second go-round, but given that we had at least ONE HUNDRED times more fun, it was even better than just the increase in candy.
